Sukumar and Battini learning to repair a car

The Andaman and Nicobar islands were severely damaged by the tsunami. These teenagers lost their homes and now live in a temporary shelter. With support from Oxfam, they are training as car mechanics at a nearby workshop.

Sukumar (left) is 18. He remembers the terrible morning when the tsunami hit: “I woke up to the earth shaking. The water came right up to our house.”

Sukumar is one of 15 boys to benefit from the mechanics course. “Oxfam gave us food, lodging, and 20 days training. I hope to get a job soon.”
