Every place in the world has its own special food. There are different
ways of cooking and eating depending on where you live. Some of
us can choose from many types of food; others eat the same meals
nearly every day and hardly ever have sweets or treats. Children
everywhere love to help to prepare food, and to eat with their friends
and families.
Cidinha and her family have dinner in the living room of their
house. They often eat rice and beans, with spring onions and
coriander that they have grown in their garden. Sometimes they
eat fish, which Cindinhas father catches in the lake.
Shakeel and his family often eat lentil stew, called dal. They
eat it with rice and bread. They eat sitting on a mat in the
courtyard outside their house.
Sasha and his family sit around the table to eat. Sashas
favourite meal is borsch, a soup made with beetroot. Borsch
is good to eat when its very cold outside.
Anusibuno and her sisters sit outdoors to eat, sharing bowls.
They usually eat porridge called pumpuka, made with millet.
Sometimes they have it with smoked fish or spices. Anuisbuno
and her sisters help to grind and pound the millet to make pumpuka.
