Oxfam in Pakistan

Despite decades of apparently strong economic growth, a third of
the population of Pakistan still lives in poverty.
There is a big difference between the opportunities available to
men and to women in Pakistan. Oxfam works to promote more equality
in daily life, education, and in employment.
The destruction of natural resources is a big problem, especially
where land and water have been contaminated through water-logging
and ‘salinity’, which has destroyed vast
areas of crop-growing land and threatened the livelihoods of hundreds
of thousands of poor people who live in rural areas.
Oxfam’s work in Pakistan includes:

education work, with special emphasis on women and girls,
through schools, adult-literacy classes, teacher-training,
and non-formal education;
-
supporting Afghan refugees in the north-west of the country;
-
health work, including support for people with physical disabilities,
drug rehabilitation, health education, and training, as well
as the provision of hearing aids and orthopaedic equipment;
-
helping communities to improve water
supplies and other local natural resources. Oxfam also
works with people to find ways of protecting their homes and
livelihoods from floods.
