an Afghan community

Oxfam has many years of experience, working with communities in
Afghanistan to improve life for ordinary people. It has had an office
in the country since 1992.
Oxfam runs projects to improve health and education, which make
a difference to the future of individuals and the whole community.
We also help people to find ways to make a living - so that they
can support themselves and their families. In times of particular
need, Oxfam distributes food to people who cannot grow or buy enough
food to feed themselves. At the moment drought in Afghanistan means
that crops have not grown well and many communities are in need
of this help. Basic food aid includes grain, pulses and cooking
oil.
Oxfam also works to provide local water supplies and gives training
in health and hygiene. A project officer travelled to Kandahar to
find out about our project work there.
Oxfam employs local Afghan staff to run projects because they know
the country well and understand the needs of local communities.
Because women are so important in feeding and looking after children
in the family, we try particularly to involve them in our work.
This was still possible even with restrictions imposed by the Taliban.
Now that these restrictions have been lifted it should prove easier
to involve women in our work.
