Oxfam has worked in Bolivia since 1988, and has had an office there
since 1993.
Oxfams work in Bolivia includes:
-
supporting poor people in the
shanty town of El Alto, on the outskirts of La
Paz, which grew up when thousands of people moved there from
the countryside, in search of work. Oxfam helps people to get
involved and be consulted in city development work that will
affect them;
-
helping people to organise themselves and to learn about their
rights to land, and other legal rights;
-
working with people living on the Altiplano, supporting organisations
that help vegetable farmers to grow more varied crops, paying
for the hire of mechanical diggers to build reservoirs
to store water for times of drought, and providing veterinary
training and resources for farmers;
-
responding to the effects of severe flooding, and developing
ways to guard against future flooding;
-
helping people to improve their working conditions and employment
rights, and to find new markets for their produce.
