Bosnia - Geography and Environment
Bosnia is located in a region called the Balkan peninsula in south-eastern
Europe. It is a small country, only one-tenth the size of France.
Bosnia is bordered by Croatia in the north and west, and by Serbia
and Montenegro to the east and south.
The northern part of Bosnia is mountainous and covered with thick
forests. Here the land is used for cattle farming and fruit growing.
In the south lie rocky hills and flat plains, where farms produce
a rich variety of crops. Bosnia is also rich in natural resources:
in the vast forests are iron-ore reserves, and plentiful sources
of coal, and rivers which produce hydro-electric power.
Climate
Bosnia has cold, snowy winters in the mountains, although the climate
is milder in the south. The summers are warm and rainy in the north,
but hot and dry in the rest of the country. The region has a high
level of rainfall, and one of the highest numbers of sunny days
per year in this part of Europe.
