Oxfam in Ethiopia

Yamata, aged 9, fetching water for her family.
When this photo was taken this was a round trip of three hours,
but a well built since with Oxfam's help has halved the time
it takes her to get water

Oxfam made its first grant for development work in Ethiopia in
1962, and opened an office in Addis Ababa in 1974. During the 1984/85
famine, Oxfam played a major part in the international relief effort,
organising large-scale food distributions and water-supply projects.
Today, emergencies are a smaller part of Oxfams work in Ethiopia,
and the focus is on helping communities to find long-term solutions
to the problems they face. This includes:
-
helping people to grow more food,
conserving water, and replanting forests;
-
helping women, and people with disabilities, to earn
a living;
-
repairing and building water supplies;
-
helping to prevent and prepare for disasters, by keeping trucks
and basic supplies in store for rapid response to emergencies;
-
supporting health work,
especially with mothers and children, and promoting HIV awareness
and prevention
- giving people basic training so they can be
more productive
