An example of Oxfam's previous work in Ethiopia
Helping people to grow more food
The Delanta Rural Rehabilitation project in 1997: Oxfam is supporting local people in the North Wollo district of
Ethiopia to grow more food, to earn a living, and to improve and
protect the environment. The Delanta Rural Rehabilitation Project
(DRRP) helps by providing seeds and tools, improving water supplies
and setting up grinding mills, and by setting up community vegetable
gardens, so that people can grow food for themselves and for their
animals.

Zodi (left), and Tasfa, watering the community vegetable
garden |
The community vegetable patch pictured is on a plateau, 2,800 to
3,200 metres above sea level. Its run by 18 people, and the
garden provides them and their families with enough vegetables to
eat and some left over to sell. Vegetables were not grown in the
area before, but since the vegetable gardens were introduced three
years ago, others have taken an interest and started their own plots.
Tasfa, shown here watering her garden, is proud of the garden:
"Before I had to buy vegetables for my family, when I had
money. Now were saving that money for other necessary things,
eating more vegetables than before and even earning a little money
with those we sell ... its a good idea!"

Mr Dmisi Averi waters his garden |
Mr Dmsi Averi has started his own vegetable plot, and hes
also growing tree seedlings which will help to improve the soil:
"I started this plot when I learned the techniques used in
the Oxfam nursery and vegetable gardens," he says. "I
am growing various types of tree seedlings and I also have vegetables
such as onion and cabbage. I am trying to grow carrots for the first
time this year."
