Oxfam in Ghana - Finding Solutions
Oxfam helps to fund an organisation that works in four villages
in the Kassena-Nankani District of the Upper East Region in northern
Ghana. The work involves local people in all sorts of activities
- helping people to earn a living, to grow more food, to care for
livestock, as well as to learn to read and write, and to know more
about health-care. The organisation is called the Programme for
Strengthening Community Organisation and Management (POSCOM), and
its aim is to help local communities to find solutions to their
problems themselves, through training, and by sharing their skills.

Zuo village has about 3,000 people living in it. When POSCOM
began its work with the villagers, it helped them to form the
Zuo Womens Trading Union, and the Zuo Farmers (Mens)
Association.
"I was chosen by the Womens Union to train to be a village
vet. Were fortunate to have the womens group, and to
make it successful, we have to take an active part. Im a confident
person, and Ive always been good with animals, and the women
recognised this and chose me. Ive seen the benefits of our
being able to treat the animals, and prevent them from getting sick.
Since we have had a veterinary medical kit in the village, and learned
how to treat the animals, we havent had any of them die of
disease. This means that the people here can rely on their animals,
to sell to earn some money." - Aponyaana Atela, Zuo
village.
