Oxfam in the UK

Some people are surprised when they find out that Oxfam works to
help poor people in the UK, as well as overseas. Although the UK
is a rich nation, there are many people living in poverty, and an
ever-widening gap exists between rich and poor.
Poverty means more than not having enough money or possessions:
it means having no say in things that affect your life, no power
to change things for the better, and often being treated as a second-class
citizen. And thats the same for poor people wherever they
live.
The UK Poverty Programme is a very small part of Oxfams work
overall, though by supporting other organisations and initiatives,
as it does in other parts of the world, Oxfam aims to make a big
impact. You can read about two of Oxfam's projects in the UK here:
Youth issues take centre stage
and Safe haven for asylum seekers.
These are the five main themes of Oxfams work in the UK:
-
Helping people in poverty to make their voices heard by the
people who make decisions that affect their lives and community
-
Bringing ideas and experience from our work with people all
over the world, to the UK
-
Raising awareness of the particular ways in which poverty
affects women
-
Challenging negative attitudes towards people living in poverty
-
Tackling the links between poverty and ethnic origin, and
supporting black and Asian organisations concerned with these
issues
