Oxfam in the UK - Safe haven for asylum seekers
Pilar was forced to leave Ecuador because of harassment by the
government. She is hiding her face because shes afraid of
being recognised.
Imagine a situation so bad that you are forced to leave your home,
your school, your friends, and your family. Then to arrive in a
country where you know nobody, cant speak the language, and
havent any money at all.
This is the reality for many people who arrive in the UK after
fleeing conflict or persecution at home. Life continues to be very
difficult, as changes in UK law mean that many asylum seekers, who
can barely afford even basic necessities, are now unable to receive
state welfare benefits, or to work.
Oxfam is working with others to change unfair policies on and discriminating
attitudes to asylum seekers. Oxfam supports The Refugee Councils
"One Stop Service" which was set up in Brixton, South
London in 1998. This provides the most vulnerable asylum seekers
with all the services they need under one roof, including advice
on practical issues such as accommodation, health care, and language
classes. Its a safe and friendly environment where asylum
seekers can also get a hot meal, do laundry, and meet with people
who have had similar experiences.
Pilar welcomed the service: "I like coming to the
One Stop Service because I have made friends here they understand
what Ive been through".
