Oxfam in Viet Nam

Oxfam started working in Viet Nam in the 1970s, distributing medical supplies to people affected by conflict. Since then, Oxfam has worked closely with the Vietnamese government to help people in some of the poorest parts of the country. Oxfam is working in Viet Nam with local organisations and government institutions to improve education and livelihoods in three main geographical areas: Lao Cai, Tra Vinh, and Ha Tinh provinces. The work includes:

Education work including teacher training, the setting up of Parent Teacher Associations, the building of schools, latrines and teachers’ houses, schemes to provide books for poor children and Braille training.
Working with poor farmers through credit and savings schemes, building and repairing sea-dykes (to protect agricultural land from damage by sea-water) loans of agricultural equipment, training in agricultural techniques, and working to repair damage to the environment , eg. by replanting mangrove forests.
Providing training and advice to help strengthen local government and non-government institutions to enable them to better target and service poorer members of society.
