Activity 3: Looks familiar

Aim: To find out which world maps pupils are most familiar with.

You will need:

How to do diamond ranking:
Diagram ranking

The group discusses which map they are most familiar with. They then arrange the nine maps in a diamond shape, with the most familiar at the top, the least familiar at the bottom, and the rest in the middle rows.

Preparation:

Print out and photocopy maps A–I so that each group has a whole set.

What to do:

1. Ask each group to 'diamond rank' the maps according to which map is most familiar (see diagram of diamond ranking).

2. Ask each group to report back in turn on which map they put at the top of the diamond, and which one they put at the bottom. Ask them how they decided to rank them. Was it easy to agree?

3. It is likely that the pupils will be most familiar with maps that focus on the UK and Europe. Explain that these maps are less relevant to people in other parts of the world. The following activity looks at who might find which map most familiar and useful.
