Maps with the east, rather than the north, at the top were used in Europe in medieval times. This was because the Holy Land, the centre of Christianity, was to the east of Europe. Placing it at the focal point of the map, in the centre and near the top, reflects the importance of the Christian Church to map-makers in European countries at that time.
