Terminology In Oxfam Development Education publications, the term 'the South' is used to refer to countries which many teachers will know as 'economically developing' or 'Third World' countries. The term 'the South' is used to describe low- and middle-income countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East. Richer countries, which are sometimes called the 'First World' or 'the West', are referred to as 'the North'. This map, showing the Peters projection of the world and a line dividing the North and the South, first appeared on the cover of North-South: a programme for survival (also known as the Brandt Report) in 1980.
