European Parliament

There are 626 Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), elected every five years in the member states by proportional representation. The MEPs are organised in political groupings, which correspond to those found in national politics (e.g. socialists, nationalists, liberals and 'greens').

The Parliament has three basic functions.
  • It shares the power to make laws with the Council of Ministers.
  • It shares control over the budget with the Council of Ministers, and can therefore influence EU spending.
  • It monitors the work of the Commission.
