Meet the family

Mary Malcolm is a dairy farmer who lives with her family in the parish of St. Elizabeth, a hilly rural area in the centre of the island.

Mary Malcolm  

Name: Mary Malcolm

Occupation: Dairy farmer

Mary grew up in this area, on a large beef and rice farm. She thinks that life is harder now than it was when she was growing up, or in the 1980s when she started farming.

Lanlie Malcolm  

Name: Lanlie Malcolm

Occupation: Dairy farmer

Lanlie and Mary met and married in 1979. Lanlie used to be a police officer in Kingston, but now he works full-time on the farm with Mary. When he gave up his job as a police officer, farming was much more profitable.

La Veta Malcolm  

Name: La Veta Malcolm

Age: 19
Student at Knox Community College

LaVeta would like to become a paediatrician or a vet. She could study at the University of the West Indies; however, the fees are high. She spends a lot of her free time at her church, where she is active in the Pathfinders Club.

Lorri-Ann Malcolm  

Name: Lorri-Ann Malcolm

Age: 14
Pupil at Maggoty High School

Lorri-Ann is interested in computers, and is thinking of becoming a systems analyst. She hopes to get a scholarship to study at a university. She enjoys church activities, and attends the Youth Fellowship regularly.

Name: Georgette Malcolm

Age: 10
Pupil at Balaclava Primary School

Georgette would like to be a judge when she grows up. She thinks that farming is hard work.

Name: Bruce Malcolm

Age: 8
Pupil at Balaclava Primary School

Bruce would like to be a farmer or a doctor. He likes playing marbles.
