The future
Farmers like Mary Malcolm are fighting to prevent the Jamaican
dairy industry from being destroyed by subsidised
milk powder dumped from abroad.
The money that is used to subsidise exports of this milk powder
comes from taxes paid by EU citizens. Do you think the EU
should be using its taxpayers' money like this?
Unfair trade rules allow richer countries to subsidise their
produce, and dump
it on the markets of poorer countries, putting hard-working
and efficient farmers like Mary out of business. If these rules
were changed to make trade fair, Mary would still have to work
hard, as all small farmers must, but at least she would be protected
from unfair competition.
Look at the Take action page to
find out what you can do about this situation.
What about small farmers in developed countries? Read about
John Lougher,
a dairy farmer in Wales. Does he have problems? Are the two
farmers linked in any way?
