The future

Pictures of John on his farm

In spite of the fact that he receives indirect support from the EU, John is not able to earn a living from dairy farming. Liz's salary and the income from the holiday cottages help him stay on the farm. Some EU farmers are better off than him. However, Mary in Jamaica receives no help from her government – poorer countries cannot generally afford to support farmers in this way.

If you look at the issues, you will see that small farmers all over the world face certain problems. However, unfair trade rules mean that they receive different levels of support.

The future of farming affects us all. Globalisation means that what one country does affects what happens in another. How do you think our food should be produced? How do you think farmers around the world should be treated? What rules do you think should govern world trade? To find out more about what you can do, visit the Take action page.
