Top left, raw rock with visible gold flecks. Top right and bottom left, miners at Ashanti Goldfields. Bottom right, smelting the gold in the Gold House.

The bulk of Ghana's gold reserves lie in the Ashanti region, which has vast underground resources. Ashanti Goldfields Corporation has long been the country's largest producer and the mine has been operational for around 100 years. In 1997, Goldfields' output was over one million ounces.
