on
the line millennium poems
These poems were sent in
by visitors to the On the Line websiteThe Market
Fawziya, aged 14, Ghana
The stalls are set in the market place,
And clamour will soon begin,
For crowding along, come the motley throng,
To join in the colourful din.
There seem to be every single thing,
That ever was born or made,
In the teeming space of the market place,
Where people barter and trade
Cabbages, carrots, tomatoes and beans,
Set out in a fine display,
And gay coloured dishes,
To add to the bright aray.
Tobacco and milk, things for measuring out
The groundnut, gari and rice,
And you argue and chat about this thing and that,
Before you agree on the price
