My Country
by Azzedine Mihoubi, 1959, Algeria
My country is larger than I
And I am larger than all the wounds
My country is the tune of a pipe
played by the hand of infants in May
My country is a lump of sugar
the remains of a child's dream in November
My hand is a wingless she-bird
And my eyes are the moon that stores light with the ribs of morning.
