Meet Asamoah, a cocoa producer
in Ghana
- Ghana is one of seven large cocoa-growing countries. The
others are the Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Cameroon in Africa, Malaysia and Indonesia in
Asia, and Brazil in South America. Which continent is Ghana in?
- Ghana is tropical and hot all year. It has wet seasons and
dry seasons.
- Many people depend on cocoa growing in Ghana. Cocoa provides
work for about two million farmers, and 40 per cent of the money Ghana gets from selling
things abroad comes from the sale of cocoa.
- Most cocoa beans go by road to the docks at Tema, then
travel by ship to Rotterdam in Holland. There the beans are turned into industrial
chocolate.
- Ghana does make its own chocolate but it has to pay taxes to
export it to European countries. This makes it too expensive to sell in European shops.
