Landscapes - the bush
carrying water
Carrying water back to the village

Out in the bush, the boys and men look after their herds of goats and cattle. At least that is the way it used to be until drought in the 1980s wiped out herds of animals, and many people were left with nothing. Now the boys are as likely to be found in the village field, where the villagers grow drought-tolerant crops like millet and sorghum.

"During the big drought of 1984-85 there was no grass at all so the animals were just eating sand, so of course they died. Eventually I came to see that it was time to settle. The nomadic life is very tiring, but we couldn't continue at all without our animals." Idjirinta Ag Imbikrane
