| The stone
wall holds soil and rainwater in so that plants can be grown |
On
the arid land of the Bandiagra plateau, growing crops
is a struggle. The rivers have run dry, and rainwater
is rapidly eroding the little soil that does exist.
Soil also needs to be gathered from where the wind and
rains have carried it. Women, children, and sometimes
men carry the rainwater to their fields. Stone walls
hold in the soil, and constant care keeps the crops
growing. Even in the dry season, little patches of bright
green mark out the fields, where drought-resistant sorghum,
millet and onions are grown.
