About Magical Mali

screenshot of Magical Mali home page

Magical Mali is an online school activity exploring Mali for 8-12 year olds. It contains six different activities: Mali on the Map, which asks children to point to Mali on a map and then allows them to look closer at four locations in Mali; Landscapes of Mali which presents some different landscapes in Mali, and asks children to compare them with where they live; What's the weather like?, an activity which compares weather in Mali with weather in your nearest town, The Sounds of Mali, which explores life in Mali through sounds; Timbuktu, a detailed 'visit' to the ancient city of Timbuktu (Tombouctou); and The Mali Quiz, which contrasts country information from the UK and Mali.

The thinking behind the activity and suggested ways of extending the work into the classroom, are outlined in the Teachers' notes, Framing geographical enquiry into a place

Magical Mali was written by Kate Russell from the Staffordshire Local Education Authority, and developed into an online activity by Jeremy Dennis, from the On the Line web team.

The information, story and photos for the activities were supplied by Oxfam GB.
