Timbuktu - city of saints
The wooden poles are part of the internal 'scaffolding' of the mosque.

Timbuktu is called the City of Mysteries, and the City of the 333 Saints. There are many mosques in Timbuktu, but it became an important centre of learning because of three famous mosques: Djinguereber Mosque (1327), the Sidi Yahya (1400), and the Sankore Mosque and University (15th Century). In addition Timbuktu had approximately 180 Koranic schools and a number of private libraries. At its height, there were more than 25,000 students in the city.
