Ronda is a beautiful village set on a rocky promontory on the edge of a breathtaking gorge falling down 100-m ( 330-ft). It is an awesome village with historic interest as well. It has a population of 33.806. Ronda is on the edge of the Serranía of Ronda, this one is a mountainous area that belongs to the Penibética Mountain Range (runs along the Provinces of Málaga and Cádiz). The view from the bridge is impressive, this bridge called New Bridge (El Puente Nuevo) was built in the 18th century and connects both sides of the town separated by the gorge called The Tajo of Ronda (El Tajo de Ronda). Historical buildings and monuments Ronda is one of the oldest towns in Spain and was for a long time capital of an independent Moorish Kingdom, finally conquered by the Christians in 1485. The historical monuments and buildings are examples of the rich Arab and Christian past such as the House of the Moorish King (La Casa del Rey Moro), the Palace of Mondragon, the Palace of the Marquis of Salvatierra, the House of the Giant Street (La Casa de la calle del Gigante) and the Church of the Espíritu Santo. Ronda's bullring - La Plaza de Toros - is one of the oldest in Spain if not the oldest, it was built in 1785. It is situated in the new part of the town. The old part is called La Ciudad (the town) and has lots of narrow, twisting streets and houses. The surroundings of Ronda are worthy being visited as well: lots of old Roman ruins, impressive cliffs, Arab ruins and caves with Palaeolithic rupestrian paintings. The area is very fertile, with lots of fruits, olive trees, vineyards and other products typical of this rich land. |
