Lesson plan: Mapping it out
From the Go Bananas! online resource
Age group: 5 - 11
Aims:
To give practice
in reading and using world maps.
To help children appreciate the large distances travelled by bananas.
What to do:
You will need copies of the outline map, atlases and other reference
books.
 |
(This outline map is a Peters projection
which shows the countries of the world in their true proportions)
Click on the map to get
a larger size for printing out. |
Divide the children into pairs or small groups. Ask them to:
find the UK on the outline map;
mark the round trip of ships transporting bananas
to the UK, with time taken;
(for older children) find out real distances
and calculate the average number of miles covered per day by ships.
Note for teachers:
Make atlases and other suitable reference books available for children
to check the identification of countries (but only after they have
tried it themselves first).
It takes about six days for a ship to travel from the Caribbean
to the UK.
