Photo gallery

The ten photos in the gallery depict the various stages of clothing manufacturing - from growing cotton to buying finished garments in the UK. The photo gallery has been split into two sets of five photos. (As the files are large, they will take a few minutes to come through.) After printing off each set, you can cut them into single photos -- for flexible use in the classroom.

Photos 1 - 5:
1. Ripe cotton seed pods;
2. Separating the seeds from the cotton fibres by hand. This is called hand ginning;
3. Using a spinning wheel to make thread.
4. Winding thread in a factory.
5. A hand-loom weaver at work.

Photos 6 - 10:
6. Hand-dyeing cloth.
7. Hand-printing the cloth using wooden blocks coated in dye.
8. Drying dyed cloth at home.
9. Sewing the clothes.
10. Buying clothes in a high street shop in the UK.
