Lesson plan: Whose ideas?
From the Dealing with Disasters online
resource
Age group: 11 - 14
Aims:
To increase awareness of the range of possible long-term responses
to tackle the causes of disasters.
To promote discussion as to which of these reponses might be most
effective.
To develop skills of discussion and co-operation.
What to do:
Download and photocopy the worksheet
- whose ideas? so that you have enough for each pair of
pupils to share one. Using the sheet, ask each pair of pupils to
reach agreement as to which of the three characters have the best
ideas. Ask each pair to join two others and attempt to reach an
agreement amongst the six.
Alternatively, ask pupils (in pairs, then sixes) to rank the ideas
in the shape of a diamond (best at the top, next following, etc)
as below:

Finally, ask each group to report which ideas they liked most and
least, and why.
Further work
An election could be held, with pupils voting for
three of these characters who would have to solve the problem. This
would allow for further discussion, for example on the limitations
faced by elected representatives.
