Resources and displays
-
Check that the world maps, atlases and globes in the school
are up to date. Equal area maps such as the Peters projection,
or Ekert 1V, present fairer representations of the world than
the Mercator projection with its Euro-centric view.
-
Ensure resources you use - such as class and library books,
play equipment, music collections - are free of bias and stereotyping
of diversity. Dispose of some if necessary. Set up a Bias
Alert! system. Buy some new
books and resources which deal with issues of Global Citizenship.
Your local Development
Education Centre will be able to advise you.
-
Build up a Global Photograph Collection. Calendars, postcards
and magazines such as National Geographic can be especially
useful, and can be cheaply bought at jumble sales or in charity
shops. How these are used is of utmost importance - see 'Images
and Artefacts' for presenting positive images of people
and places.
-
Ensure that all displays reflect the ethos of the school.
