Oxfam Development Education Grants

About Oxfam's Grants Programme

Oxfam's work in Development Education (DE) aims to have an impact on schools, the curriculum, the training and classroom practice of teachers, and what students learn in school - throughout the UK. We can only hope to achieve this impact through partnerships and co-operation with other organisations sharing similar goals.

Oxfam's grants programme supports a range of exciting education projects, mainly through the work of local Development Education Centres (DECs).

The Oxfam Development Education Grants Programme, working to support the implementation of the global dimension in the formal education sector, and operating in England, Scotland and Wales, has adopted the following aims:

  • To continue to develop and extend Oxfam’s commitment to ensuring that Education for Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development is firmly embedded in formal sector education policy and practice.
  • To focus on emerging and evolving areas in educational provision where development education initiatives could influence change and have most strategic impact.
  • To gather evidence of the benefits of Education for Global Citizenship and Sustainable Development on society and educational practice.
  • To engage new audiences that are significant in extending the reach and impact of Education for Global Citizenship.
  • To support the work of established and new partners, and build their capacity to develop and resource new initiatives, projects and programmes.
  • To develop and disseminate learning about methodology and good practice within development education.
  • To help achieve these aims, Oxfam has introduced a 3-Tier grant support programme.

Tier 1: Core Programme Support
Oxfam’s Tier 1 Funding is designed to support DECs and other organisations in promoting Development Education in the formal education sector at a local level. It can be used to provide a range of development education outreach activities for schools, teachers, LEAs, initial teacher education and other educational support providers, including curriculum projects, training, advice, resource production and dissemination.

  • Grant support for up to 3 years in principle.
  • Grant ceiling of £10,000 p.a.
  • Deadline: 31 March 2007

Tier 2: Regional and national Enabling Effective Support (EES) strategy developments and training.
  • These are not available for 2007.

Tier 3: New and Innovative Projects
Tier 3 has been devised specifically to support ‘new’ project work that adds something significantly new or or innovative to the field of Education for Global Citizenship in the formal education sector. Specifically, a Tier 3 project will:
  • extend the impact and reach of Education for Global Citizenship among current and new audiences in new and innovative ways
  • generate learning as the main project outcome (not classroom or other resources)
  • generate learning that is of direct relevance to educationalists working in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (i.e. the learning must be readily transferable to the formal education sector or ITE in all jurisdictions, despite differing educational structures and curriculum contexts)
  • include rigorous plans for evaluation and gathering evidence of impact

Additional information:

  • Applications are welcome from organisations based in Northern Ireland as well as England, Scotland and Wales.
  • Tier 3 grants are for one year projects only and are not avaliable as co-funding for multi-year projects.
  • The Grant ceiling is £15,000
  • Deadline: 31 May 2007
