About the Global Citizenship in Literacy Lesson plans
From the Literacy and English online resource
This series of lessons shows how issues of Global Citizenship can
be incorporated into Literacy. Good-quality texts have been chosen
to provide thought-provoking material that will generate interest
and discussion. The lessons have been written to develop understanding
and awareness of Global Citizenship issues while also providing
progression in Literacy skills.
For those teachers following the Literacy Strategy, the lessons
are designed to fit in with Year 2, Year 4 and Year 6. The objectives
covered in the Literacy Strategy are highlighted at the beginning
of each series of lessons. The lessons are equally suitable for
English/Literacy lessons in Scotland and Wales.
Emphasis has been given to comprehension and composition (text-level
work), with grammar and punctuation (sentence-level work) and spelling
and vocabulary (word-level work) being incorporated where the links
are appropriate. It is anticipated that other aspects of sentence-level
and word-level work will be covered separately. The materials lend
themselves well to the development of speaking and listening skills.
The work has been differentiated, but teachers may need to extend
this further to suit the needs of the pupils.
The length of each series of lessons is flexible. There is much
scope for extending them further, to allow deeper discussions of
the issues. Ways of investigating the issues further include circle
time activities, assembly preparation and presentation, and role
play.
The worksheets at the end of each series of lessons, to be used
as whole-class texts, can be photocopied for use on an overhead
projector or enlarged on a photocopier from A4 to A3 for the class
to read.
