Lesson plan: Captioning

From the Making a Meal of It! online resource

Age group: 7 - 11

Aims:
To help children recognise that photos can mean different things to different people.

What to do:
Photocopy one photo (see photo 1, photo gallery) so that you have enough for each group of four pupils. Give each group a different brief but ask them all to write a caption to go with the photo.

The briefs could be:

  • You are producing an advert for the supermarket.

  • You are an environmental group campaigning against large out-of-town supermarkets and superstores.

  • You are producing a radio programme about the advantages and disadvantages to consumers of large supermarkets.

  • You are a market stall owner objecting to the building of a new out-of-town supermarket as you feel it will damage your livelihood.
