Looking Behind the Logo
Geographical Association Awards 2005 - Highly Commended
Oxfam have created a thought provoking role-play activity booklet that is an excellent teaching resource and a source to explore development issues. The booklet uses sports and fashion wear as a vehicle to allow the students to study the workings of world trade and how it impacts on the lives of people worldwide. In a rapidly changing world this booklet contains balanced, up-to-date materials. It uses young people’s everyday experiences to challenge the KS3 student in their investigation of the topic.
The booklet provides a teachers guide giving a carefully explained and well structured preparatory exercise, main role-play and debrief activities. Role-play activities are not new but are now less commonly used in the classroom and provide a different teaching and learning medium for students. It is a well-researched activity that is both relevant and engaging for students.
Looking behind the Logo offers a different approach to a topic that is central to the geography curriculum, but one many teachers find difficult to teach. It adopts a role-play approach to the investigation. It can be used as a good starting point for further research into the topic of globalisation or as a summative exercise. It builds on the student’s own experiences as a means of understanding the issues in the wider world.
This is a booklet that all secondary schools geographers could use with their classes or simply to explore their own thoughts and attitudes on development issues. It shows how people’s values and attitudes affect issues, decision-making and the analysis of evidence. The booklet has wider links across the curriculum, including Citizenship, PSD, Business Studies, Drama, English, Technology and Textiles.
