Lesson plan: Captions

From the Photo Opportunities online resource

Age group: 7-11

Aims:
To introduce captions as a way of extending knowledge about pictures.
To practice reading, writing and communication skills.

What to do:
You will need:

Divide the class into small groups. Give each group a caption. Ask the groups to read their caption, and think together about what might be happening in the corresponding photo. Each group could make a list of the things they expect to see in their photo. Ask each child to draw a picture to go with their caption. (Alternatively, groups could work together to produce a large, shared picture.) When everyone has finished, each group should look through the photo gallery and 'claim' the photo that matches their caption. (If more than one group claims a photo, the teacher should help the children to decide.) The original photos and the drawings can then be looked at together and the class can compare the results.

Note for teachers:
The teacher's guide to captions provides a quick key to the photos and captions.

Extension work: 30-60 minutes:
Click on 'reveal the captions' at the top of the page to provide each picture with its matching caption. Encourage children to investigate the information in the captions. How many country names can they find? How many names of people? If the people in the photos are not named, how are they described? By occupation, nationality, gender ...?

Ask children to write down unfamiliar words. Make a class dictionary, and display it with the photos.

For older children:
This activity also works well the other way round. Make sure the captions are hidden (click on 'hide the captions' at the top of the page if they are showing). Let each group choose a photo, and ask them to write a caption to go with it. What would they like to know more about? What key words might they expect to find in a caption for their photo? This is a good way to extend vocabulary: if the exact words predicted by children are not in the printed caption, they might find synonyms, or other related vocabulary.

Planned outcome:
That pupils learn to examine photographs carefully and understand how captions are helpful as a way of extending knowledge.
