Lesson plan: Cropping
Age group: 7-11
Aims:
To develop visual literacy skills.
To show that a photo is only a fragment of a much wider scene.
What to do:
You will need:
Print out a selection of photos from the gallery. Crop the photos
in a way that will encourage pupils to imagine what is happening
'outside the frame'. Divide children into groups, and give each
group a small part of a photo, stuck on to a large sheet of paper.
Ask them to extend the picture by drawing. When they have finished,
discuss what they have added. Show them the 'complete' photo, and
compare it with their interpretation.
Note for teachers:
You may want to introduce the concept of a 'frame' before you
begin this activity. Cover a familiar poster with a large sheet
of paper.
Cut a window in the paper to reveal a detail, and ask the children
to remember what else is in the poster. Enlarge the window,
and
check the results. Finally, reveal the whole poster, and ask
if there might be other things happening 'outside the frame'.
Extension work:
Find pictures that have been framed or cropped into different shapes.
Good sources are magazines, adverts, and packaging.
Planned outcome:
That pupils understand that a photo is only a fragment of a much
wider scene.
