Develop observation/listening skills
Ask one pupil to describe a photo to a partner, who tries to draw
it from the description. Send five pupils out of the room. Ask another
pupil to study a photo carefully, and then to describe it to the
first pupil to come back in. Based on that description, the first
pupil then describes it to the next to come in, and so on. Choose
five or six photos, including some from the UK if possible. Ask
pupils to find common themes between photos. Perhaps some people
are smiling, or everyone is working ...
Introduce a new topic using photos
Choose photos relevant to your topic. Stick each photo onto a large
sheet of paper, and ask pupils to write down as many questions and
observations as they can around the photo. Use this as the basis
for further work.
Let pupils choose their own photos
Display photos around the classroom. Give each pupil a coloured
sticker, and ask them to stick it beside their favourite photo.
Pupils who choose the same photo can then work with it as a group.
(You may have to divide large groups.)
Build up an image bank on a topic
Children can collect sets of images on a theme such as play, clothing,
transport, weather ... Use the image bank to make a photomontage.
Look at shapes and patterns
Choose photos with well-defined shapes and patterns. Fix a sheet
of tracing paper onto each photo, and ask pupils to trace the shapes
that they see. How many can they find? How many can they name?
