UN International Day of the African Child
This day honours the lives of the school children who marched onto the streets of Soweto in 1976. While protesting about the quality of their education and their right to be taught in their own language, hundreds were killed, and thousands injured, after the police opened fire. This day commemorates all those who stood up for their educational rights.
