Bring an educational dimension to fundraising

Introduction

Lots of schools do amazing work raising money for all sorts of good causes. The response to the Asian tsunami, for instance, was a powerful example of how schools can recognise a desperate need and involve children in their response to it. Schools also raise money to support Oxfam’s longer-term development work. This may not hit the headlines but it makes lasting improvements to the lives of poor people.

Oxfam Unwrapped is a new ‘gift catalogue’ that enables individuals and schools to buy gifts for poor people. The communities that Oxfam works with around the world have identified every gift as essential. Unwrapped proved very popular with schools when it was launched in 2004, so we have designed support for teachers who want to explore with their students why these items are needed and how they will be used.

On Cool Planet for Children there are case studies and photo stories that feature some of the items you can buy from the Unwrapped catalogue, such as farmyard animals. The stories give background information about why these items are needed and how they will help poor people to build better lives. On Cool Planet for Teachers we have also assembled a number of lesson ideas to suggest ways of using the case studies in the classroom.

If you aren't fundraising, teach anyway!
You don’t have to raise money to use these case studies in the classroom. They are great resources in their own right and will help your students understand more about the lives of people in developing countries. But if you do choose to fundraise and buy from Oxfam Unwrapped, we hope the case studies and activities will help your students understand more about how they can actually do something to help poor people all over the world.

Case Studies
(also on Cool Planet for Children)

We have provided some of these case studies in a ‘pop-up’ format with use on an interactive whiteboard in mind. We would welcome feedback to coolplanet@oxfam.org.uk about whether this is a useful format.
