About the project

A decade after the end of a long civil war, Liberia is struggling to rebuild. In particular, agricultural production has failed to recover, and now Liberia has to import most of its rice, the country's staple food. The result is that over 30 per cent of people are undernourished, and most of the population is vulnerable to even the smallest price rises. With your support we can help improved farming techniques, so farmers can increase their production, producing enough to feed themselves and sell any surplus at a decent price.

Susana has been farming rice most of her adult life. Before Oxfam's rice project Susana used to farm upland.

Project aims

  • Improve production of rice and vegetables for home consumption and sale by providing training and better seeds, and establishing irrigation systems.
  • Boost incomes - particularly of women farmers - by improving marketing opportunities and growers' business skills.
  • Provide management and maintenance training to ensure the long-term effectiveness of the irrigation systems and rice-processing facilities.

How we are helping

Like most farmers in her area, Annie Wondee used to be unable to produce enough food to feed her family and was dependent on wheat distribution from the UN Food Programme.

However, Oxfam helped to introduce an innovative project encouraging farmers to cultivate rice in swamps, breaking away from the traditional farming in the highlands. The results were impressive. Today, 1,500 farmers - over half of whom are women - are growing rice, and yields continue to increase.

For the first time my harvest will last me through the year. I have been able to produce 757 bundles of rice compared to 175 three years ago.
