Nepal: Give poor farming families a brighter future

Who will benefit?

15,000 people, mainly women and minority groups, will be able to grow and earn more.

Indirectly, 24,000 will learn how to cope better with issues that affect their lives.

Target £150,000

Raised £47,873

About the project

Poor rural communities in western Nepal are facing a food crisis. For much of the year, most people cannot grow enough to feed themselves. There is little knowledge of effective farming techniques and a lack of irrigation. This means people rely on increasingly unpredictable rainfall and poor quality seeds.

They spend what little income they have on expensive imported food. Consequently, hunger is widespread and crop yields are declining. With your support, we can give families the skills to grow more, stay healthy and generate a decent income, while having a greater influence over their own lives.

Project aims

  • Increase farming families' crops yields, earnings and nutrition by introducing effective farming methods, irrigation and better seeds.
  • Improve communities' abilities to adapt to changing climate, and understanding of the importance of hygiene and nutrition.
  • Empower communities to campaign for their right to food, livelihoods and government support.

How we are helping

Sarumati's family farm a tiny patch of land. But, because of a lack of rainfall, they can only cultivate crops for two months a year. To afford food, Sarumati earnt money clearing rocks, whilst her husband worked as a labourer in India.

Oxfam helped Sarumati's community build an irrigation system. Sarumati received agricultural training and seeds, and now grows a variety of vegetables and ginger that she is able to sell at the local markets.

Today, my family can grow food for most of the year. My husband has returned and we farm together, and we can send our children to school.
