Occupied Palestinian territory: supporting olive farmers

Who will benefit?

Around 2,000 people will be able to grow more, process crops and increase opportunities.

50,000 olive-farming families could benefit indirectly.

Target £180,000

Raised £45,682

About the project

Half of agricultural land in the occupied Palestinian territory is given over to olive growing. But economic pressures and the impact of the Israeli occupation mean that production is suffering and incomes are plummeting. Thousands of trees have been destroyed and growers are often denied access to their land, water and markets.

Your support can help establish women-only co-operatives, growing higher-yielding, better-quality crops, supported by new oil pressing and processing facilities. The aim is to manufacture a variety of olive products within Fairtrade guidelines, which will help growers earn more in both domestic and international markets.

Project aims

  • Increase women growers' incomes by improving the quantity and quality of olives and processed olive products.
  • Promote growth in the olive oil sector, and diversify into new olive-based products - prospectively with Fairtrade certification - to open up lucrative new markets.
  • Empower more women to become agricultural and business leaders in their communities.

How we are helping

Intesar Zaaror runs the successful Sir co-operative. Previously, its 25 women members used to work individually, each waiting until they had enough olives to send for pressing, during which time their crop deteriorated, as did its value. Oxfam helped growers pool their resources. Now they collect enough olives to press fresh each day, making top quality, Fairtrade olive oil.

Oxfam's programme has increased our income and status. We've proved that we can be business women and still focus on our families. We use the extra income to send our children to university to improve their opportunities. The co-operative benefits us all.
