FAQs about leaving Oxfam a gift in your will

Find answers to commonly asked questions about leaving a gift in your will to Oxfam.

  • What happens if I don't have a will?

If you die without making a will, this could result in your estate not going where you would have wished. For instance, your husband, wife or partner may not automatically receive all of your estate.

  • How do I leave a gift to Oxfam in my will?

Thanks for thinking of Oxfam - legacies make a very important contribution to our fundraising. Visit our legacies pages for more information.

  • Can Oxfam be my executor?

If you remember Oxfam in your will we may be able to act as your executor. Your personal circumstances will dictate whether or not we are able to accept this responsibility. We are bound by the Charity Commission, who set out our legal terms of reference, and by our paramount duty to help poor people to help themselves. This means that we need to know how complex it would be to administer a supporter's estate so that we can ensure that any expense incurred by acting as an executor is covered by the gift left to Oxfam. Please email legacy@oxfam.org.uk or telephone 0300 200 1331.

  • How will Oxfam use my legacy gift?

Your legacy to Oxfam is a gift to help poor people change their lives for the better, for good. Oxfam is driven by the belief that, in a wealthy world, poverty is an injustice that must be overcome. (Find out more about how we work).  Over time the nature of Oxfam's work does change, and as it's likely to be many years before we receive your legacy gift, it can be difficult to know exactly where and how we'll be working when we receive it.  If you'd like to discuss any specific wishes you have, please email legacy@oxfam.org.uk or telephone 0300 200 1331.

  • If I’ve left a gift to Oxfam in my will, should I tell you?

It is really helpful if you can let us know that you have included us in your will - this information will always be treated in complete confidence. There's no need to tell us the value of your gift (unless you want to); just knowing we have a source of future income helps us to plan ahead with our long-term work.

  • I'm acting as an executor. What should I do?

If you are acting as executor for the estate of someone who has left a bequest to Oxfam in their will, please contact our specialist Legacy Administration team on legacy@oxfam.org.uk, or telephone 0300 200 1331. They can also provide any advice or assistance you may require.

  • Can a gift to charity help me pay less tax?

The money and assets left in your estate may be subject to Inheritance Tax (the rules for which can change with any Chancellor's budget). It may be of advantage to divide your estate so that your family and friends are left gifts below the tax threshold and so do not have to pay for Inheritance Tax. The remainder can then be shared between as many charities as you choose, since charities are exempt from paying this tax.
