
Background and information on the earthquake and response

On Tuesday 12 January 2010 a massive earthquake struck the Caribbean country of Haiti. Many of you will have seen and heard about it on television, the radio and in the papers.
A huge international relief effort is underway to help the people of Haiti.
Between 100,000 and 200,000 people are thought to have died and many more are presumed dead or missing.
This assembly will give you some background to what happened and why the impact of the earthquake was so severe.
We need as much support as possible in order to deliver the Aid and assistance needed to save lives and to help survivors rebuild their lives.
