Water for All is the latest of Oxfam’s outstanding range of websites that support global education. It is intended for Key Stage 2 children, although Key Stage 3 groups will find much of value, and some of the images can easily be used with younger children. Best of all, it is free.
There is a range of activities based around Water for All – geography predominates, but Mathematics and Design Technology are also included. There are a large number of colourful, informative photographs, some organised into thematic slide shows. These are ideal for use with an interactive whiteboard, although that is not essential. Included are a series of case studies that are informative and accessible for the target audience.
Activities encourage speaking, listening and thinking skills. They engage children well through the interactive nature of the tasks. One particularly good activity is a quiz for children early on in the topic, using colourful images and questioning skills. This can be carried out by small groups on a computer or by a whole class using a data projector. In both cases it will lead to much discussion.
All of this is well supported by a teachers’ notes section. Included are 7 lesson plans for Key Stage 2, although it is not by any means essential to follow this route through the resources.
This web site is a worthy award winner. Every primary and Key Stage 3 teacher should investigate this site, and then explore further other Oxfam websites.
