Writing a Persuasive Letter

Resources for writing to an MP, MSP or AM
Persuasive Writing

Writing a letter to a political representative helps make English 'real' by linking it to a relevant and meaningful situation, a challenge highlighted by Ofsted in Moving English Forwards (2011). This resource encourages learners to write for a particular audience, context and purpose.

Giving learners the opportunity to engage with their political representative is also an important part of Citizenship (England), ESDGC (Wales) and the Curriculum for Excellence (Scotland). Writing to an MP, MSP or AM about an issue they feel passionate about will help learners to understand the role of political representatives and campaigning to bring about change.

The following guide will help learners to write an effective letter.

See Oxfam's Calendar of Action and Learning for resources based around particular issues.

Oxfam Youth Ambassadors

This resource is suitable for curriculum-based classroom learning but it has been written primarily for Oxfam's Youth Ambassador Groups. Youth Ambassadors meet in their own time (with the support of a teacher) to learn together about global issues, whilst developing the skills and the confidence to make their voices heard. If you are using this resource in an extra-curricular setting then we suggest you register as a Youth Ambassador Group. Registered groups gain access to our structured award scheme, badges and certificates, newsletters, all the latest resources and one-to-one support by phone and email.
