Buy a camel! Buy a goat! Oxfam Unwrapped is here!
After the phenomenal success of the Oxfam Unwrapped catalogue this Christmas, we've updated it with loads of new gifts. The idea behind the catalogue is that when you're stuck for what to buy someone, you can give much-needed products and services to the world's poorest people instead. Oxfam will then send a certificate to the person you bought the gift for, telling them about the difference their donation has made to people's livelihoods. Last time round it was all about the goat, which was easily the most popular gift. Goat fans will be pleased to hear the goat is still in - along with her new pals, the cow and camel. You can even buy your smelly little brother an essential hygiene kit...

how many goats will be purchased, and where will all the food need for them come from?

This is an absolutely appalling scheme which in the long run will do far more harm than good. I wonder just how many of these poor animals are just slaughtered for food and how many people die because the goats are eating their crops!

In response to John (20 December):
Where goats are bought they are supplied in small quantities to each household in subsistence farming and herding communities. Grain does not have to be grown specifically to feed their animals, which could put a strain on the environment, and run the risk of crop failure due to poor soil, drought and disease. In severe droughts, Oxfam may help by distributing water and fodder or rehabilitating livestock water sources.
Over Christmas 2005 over 400,000 gifts were bought from Oxfam Unwrapped. Goats are just one of the gifts available - the catalogue also includes mango plantations, seeds, trees, mosquito nets, medicines and more...

In response to Peter Randle:
Thanks for your comment. Oxfam only provide livestock to communities where livestock keeping is an essential or traditional way of life, and appropriate to the local environment. The cost of each Unwrapped gift includes the cost of vaccinations for the animals, plus training for families who receive them on how to look after them, keep them healthy, use their manure to grow crops, and sell their milk. This sort of income often means families can afford to buy food or medicine, or send their children to school. As a result these animals are highly prized - and not slaughtered for meat. In addition, we give livestock in small quantities and grain does not have to be grown specifically to feed animals.
