Have your say on the G8 rally and Live8

We've sent our intrepid campaigner Louise to report back from the G8 rally in Edinburgh - read her diary here. If you're going to Edinburgh or the Live8 concerts in Hyde Park, or if you're watching it all on the telly, we'd love to know what you think of it all. Do you feel that change is about to happen? Post your thoughts below.

Not going to Edinburgh and didn't get tickets to Live8 - I really want to be there! I hope this weekend will be an amazing event, and show the world leaders how passionate we all are about this...

the G8 polititians will do what politicians always do, talk and give empty promisis... stick their heads in proverbial sand like ostriges and ignor real problem until becomes a crisis!

Why can't all polititicians act more like business men / people : they don't ignor problems or brush them under the carpet! They act quickly to solve them.

Can't be there for G8 protest, but heart will be. I wear make poverty history band to work every-day and have put name on the list( www.live8live.com); Have you?. If we all roar at politicions maybe they wake up do something and finally get the job done!!!!

The rally was huge - we took over three hours to finish the march. I think the Live 8 overshadowed our rally rather than emphasising it. We need to keep up the pressure now.

Hello Everyone

i would just like to say that i thought that the Live8 concerts were absolutely brilliant. They were heartwarming and yet they made me cry because they brought home to me just what we have been doing to each other and this world.
I was absolutely terrified by the realisation that we have given up our responsibility for the world and left it in the hands of just 8 men. What are we doing? We are not isolated individuals. Every choice we make affects someone or some-thing. So i say to the 8 summit leaders, "you act on our behalf for the whole world cannot attend. You are honour bound to carry out our wishes. We want a better, safer, cleaner, freer, world for everyone. Give us Fair Trade not Free Trade. Cancel thirld world debt. You know the morally right thing to do. Do not let money be your God. We are nothing without each other.

Finally i would like to say a big big thankyou to the organisers and participants of Live8. you were brilliant. You have charged my conscience and dispersed my complacency. Also a big thankyou to the organisers of this site for allowing me to express myself openly.

Thankyou
Love Helen

Hi everyone (again!)

Do you not think that the G8 summit should be televised all over the world and then the pressure would be really on them. For we would be able to see and hear exactly who said what and they could not hide behind closed doors.

By Blogger helen, July 03, 2005 11:44 AM

I think the actual content of the summit would be too dull to be televised, but letting the media into the meetings so they can tell us the important decisions and how they were made. The meetings themselves are probably long discussions over small details of proposals and not particularly helpful to us as campaigners. It's the results that matter.

Thankyou for your reply and i appreciate what you mean but i do not wish to rely on the opinions of journalists and what they think might be important. I am avidly interested in what happens and how they come to their decisions. I do not believe that 8 people should have so much control over our world affairs and we should remove some of that power and return it to the wider population by closely monitoring the summit members and making sure that they know we are watching them. In our personal jobs we are continuously assessed and monitored and they should be no different.

Paul McCartney, Bob Geldoff, U2, Mariah Carey?!?!?

Bunch of has been musicians out to get their face back on tv. What have they done in the past 10 years?

If these crusty billionaires wanted to help, they would share their fortunes.

Cancelling debt is just a reward to the gangsters running Africa and a signal to
continue just as they are.

Millions of people watching millionaires - all deluding themselves that
they are helping or making a difference. Me? I ignored it. Helping the
weak and protecting the innocent isnt just a once every 20 yrs job.

still in Edinburgh now. went to the march and it was a great atmosphere and a great thing to be a part of. unfortunately, i think the G8 will announce measures that do not go far enough. they can throw as much aid as they like at the problem but until trade is made fair, poverty can not be made history.

as for televising the G8, it's an interesting idea but an unlikely reality. the reason these meetings take place behind closed doors is so that our leaders can bargain with their country's jobs and various interests without being politically vulnerable.

let's hope they come up with something big this week

hardly even mentioned the rally at the live8 concert and you could have spent the whole time watching it without seeing any of the important issues raised. i think they hijacked a campaign that has been working hard for months leading up to this.

The Edinburgh Rally was amazing. In the end, over 225,000 people attended the march to say enough is enough to poverty. The sun was out in all it's glory and the day went as well as it possibly could have. Well done everybody - the G8 have to act now.

By Blogger Mark, July 04, 2005 3:31 PM

Well said Mark! I wish I'd been there too - it looked amazing. It's a bit of a shame the march got overshadowed by Live8 in the newspapers, but I guess the aim is the same!

By Anonymous kitty, July 04, 2005 4:14 PM

dear Annonymous

Please stop wasting life by criticising and put forward some useful and constructive ideas.

By Blogger helen, July 04, 2005 6:34 PM

If you wish to know what people like Bob Geldoff and Bono, Chris Martin etc., have been doing over the past few years then maybe you should read the newspapers and not the comics like "The Sun". The tabloids are written and published and owned by capitalists whose only interest is to make money. The power in this world belongs to the mass population and we should use our strengths to promote a better world for everyone and not sit back and hope someone else will come up with a good idea. I watched all televisation of Live8 and the issues were constantly raised and were also written in huge letters all over the stadium. The famous people involved themselves to put weight to the cause and i am so glad they are prepared to commit themselves so openly! Well Done to all of them.
